day, thus correlating the sidereal period with
the lunar period of the hour.

Again, the interval which on the average
elapses between the moments in which the
moon successively comes to the full (always
in relation to a given place such as Memphis),
that is to say a lunar month or " lunation " is
about 29\ solar days. Suppose now we take
as an unit of time thirty such solar days ; then
each lunar month would fall short of that
period by half a day or one-sixtieth part, and
the lunar year, consisting of twelve such periods,
would fall short by six days, so that all the
measures would be proportionate. Here, then,
we possess the key to a most singular correla-
tion between the lunar motions and the solar
