infinite depths of space, his eyes, now radiant
" as the eyes of Athor," seek out the well-
loved Sothis, the harhinger of the new dawn,
the portal of the illimitable heavens, "that
land of a million fortresses." And in anti-
cipation of each successive stage of this
amazing progress, this reconquest of the senses
to the dominion of the reason, we may watch
the course of the masonic postulant accepted
by the " Master of the Secret," as he is in-
ducted, chamber by chamber, into the Hidden
Places in the Pyramid of Light.

Yet thou oh a man understand the material
forces of the universe, though he know all the
phenomena of the heavens, and the composition
of the most distant suns ; nay, though he wield
with so masterly a grasp the wand of science
as to evolve at will an organic world from the
atoms of the abysmal depths, all this, in the
mind of Egypt, was not sufficient, even for
initiation into the inner mysteries of divine
