ra, le Fortezze,c quelle coseche ranno
di bisogno a distendere la libertà del-
la Patria, ed a mantenerne 1' onore,
ad accreseere la grandeza della Città,
ad acquistare ed a stabilire un
Imperio. Io certo mi penso che
sé si dimandassero tutte quelle
Città le quali, da che v è memoria
d' uomini, son venute per asse-
dio sotto lo imperio d' altri, da
chi esse fusslno soggiogate ; elle-
no certo direbbono, dallo Archi-
tetto :. E le di esse siate (osficienti
a (prezzare fàcilmente I' armato
inimico ; non lo furono giù a
durare contro alla forza dello in-
gegno, ed alla grandezza delle Ma-
chine, ed all' impeto degs istru-
menti bellici ; con lequali cose s

and to communicate their Know-
ledge, and whatever else is health-
ful or pleasurable. Add to these
the Engines and Machines of War,
Fortresies, and the like Inventions,
necessary to the defending the Li-
berty of our Country, maintaining
the Honour, and encreasing the
Greatness of a City, and to the Ac-
quisition and Establiihment of an
Empire. I am really persuaded,
that if we were to enquire of all
the Cities which, within the me-
mory of Man, have fallen by Siege
into the Power of new Mailers,
who it was that subjecled and over-
came them, they would tell you,
the Architecl ; and that they were
stròng enough to have despised the
Armed Enemy, but not to with-
sland the Shocks of the Engines,
the Violence of the Machines, and
the Force of the other Inslruments
of War, with which the Architecl
distress'd, demclishd and ruinated
them. And the Besiegcd, on the
contrary, would inform you, that
their grcatest Defence lay in the
Art and Asslilance of the Architecl.
And if you Mere to examine into
the Epeditions that have been un-
dertaken, you would go near to
find that mod of the Victories were
gain'd more by the Art and Skill
of the Architects, than by the Con-
duct or Fortune of the Generals ;
and that the Enemy was oftener
overcome and conquer'd by the
Architcd's Wit, without the Cap-
tain's
