chitetto con poca gente, e senza per-

Ma quanto il penderò et il diseorso
dello edificare diletti, e sia fitto den-
tro- negli animi degli uomini, si vede
da molte cose, e da questa ancora,
che tu non troverai nell'uno, purché
egli abbia il modo, che non abbia
dentro una certa inclinazione di edi-
ficare qualche cosa. E che sé egli avrà
col pensiero trovato cosa alcuna ap-
partenente allo edificare, volentieri
da sé stesso non la dica, et non la ma-
nifesti all' uso degli uomini, quasi
che sforzato dalla Natura. E quanto
spesib accade, che sebbenc noi sumo
occupati in altre cose, non polliamo
Erre che con la mente, e con lo ani-
mo, non ci immaginiamo di fare al-
cuni edificj. E guardando le altrui
muraglie, subito con diligenza con-
sideriamo tutte le proporzioni e mi-
sure, e le esaminiamo, e secondo le
forze dello ingegno nostro, ricerchia-
mo quali cose vi si potessero aggiu-
gnere, levare, e mutare: avvertiamo
in oltre, in che modo elleno (ariano
più compiute, o più belle. E sé alcuno
edificio sarà ben compartito e per-
fettamente finito, chi fia quello che
non lo risguardi con dilettazione e le-
tizia grandilìima ? Ma a che raccon-
terò io quanto e in casa e fuori, non
solamente abbia giovato e dilettato a'
Cittadini l'Architettura ; ma gli abbia
ancora grandemente onorati ? Chi
sarà colui,che non si reputi ad onore,
lo avere edificato ; essendo reputato

is, that the Architect conquers
with a small number of Men, and
without the loss of Troops. Let this
sumee as to the usefulnessofthis Art.
But how much the Study and
Subject of Building delights, and
how firmly it is rooted in the mind
of Man, appears from several In-
stances, and particularly from this;
that you shall find no body who has
the means but what has an incli-
nation to be building something :
and if a Man has happen'd to think
of any thing new in Architecture,
he is fond of communicating and
divulging it for the use of others,
as if constrain'd thereto by Nature.
And how often does it fall out that
even when we are employ'd upon
other things, we cannot keep our
Thoughts and Imaginations from
projecting some Edifice ? and when
we see other Men's Houses, we im-
mediately sct about a careful Exa-
mination of all the Proportions and
Dimensions, and, to the belt of
our Ability, consider what might
be added, retrench'd or alter d ;
and presently give our Opinions
how it might be made more com-
pleator beautiful. And if a Build-
ing be Well laid out, and justly fi-
niih'd, who is he that does not view
it with the utmost pleasure and de-
light? But why need I mention not
only how much benefitand delight,
but how much Glory too Archi-
tecture has brought to Nations,
which have cultivated it both at
home and abroad ? Who that has
built any publick Edifice docs not
think himself honour d by it, when
