varci. Non negheremo adunque che
egli non sia da csser lodato e tenuto
in pregio, e da esser pollo, si per la
piacevolezza e per la maravigliosa
grazia delle opere ; si per la nccelTìtà
e per li ajuti e fortezza delle cole
trovate da lui ; si per il frutto della
futura etate, infra i primi uomini che
abbiano meritato quali si srano pre-
mj ed onori. Laonde avendo noi co-
noseiute queste cose esser talmente
fatte, cominciammo per diletto dell'
animo nostro a ricercare con più di-
ligenza, dell' arte e delle cose loro,
e da che principi elleno derivassero,
e di che parti fussìno composte e fi-
nite. E avendole trovate varie, di
numero quasi infinite, di elTenza ma-
ravigliose, di utilità incredibili, in
modo che talvolta non era manifesto
qual condizione d' uomini, o qual
parte di republica o quale stato di città,
lusse più obligato allo Architetto,
anzi allo Inventore di tutte le com-
modità; il publico, o il privato, le
cose sacre, o le secolari, lo starsi, o il
travagliare, i particolari, o pur tutta
la umana generazione, deliberammo
per più cagioni che qui sariano lun-
ghe a raccontarsi,di raccorre esseme-
desime cose che in questi dieci libri
sono scritte, nel trattare delle quali
terremo quello ordine. Noi certo
abbiamo considerato che lo edificio,
è un certo corpo fatto siccome tutti
gli altri corpi di disegno, e di ma-
teria : all' uno si provede con applica-
mento di mente e di pensiero, all'al-
tra con apparecchiamento e scegli-
mento. E abbiamo ancora conside-
rato, che né l'uno né l'altra da per
sé, è suffkiente senza la mano d' uno

indebted for Tranquility, Pleasure
and Health, in time of Business for
Asslstance and Profit ; and in both,
for Security and Dignity. Let us
not therefore deny that he ought
to be praised and esteem'd, and to
beallow'd a place, both for the won-
derful and ravissiing beauty of his
Works,and for the necelllty,service-
ableness, and strength of the things
which he has invented, among the
chief of those who have deserved
Honour and Rewards from Man-
kind. The consideration of these
things induced me, for my Diver-
sion, to look a little further into
this Art and its Operations, from
what Principles it was derived, and
of what Parts it consuted : and
finding them of various kinds, in
number almost infinite, in their
nature marvellous, of nse incredi-
ble, insomuch that it was doubtful
what condition of Men, or what
part of the Commonwealth, or
what degree in the City, whether
the publick or private, things sacred
or prolane, Repose or Labour, the
Individual or the whole Humane
Species, was raost obliged to the
Architect, or rather Inventor of
all Conveniencies ; I resolved, for
several Reasons, too tedious here
to repeat, to collect- all those things
which are containd in these ten
Books. In treating of which, we
(hall observe this Method : We con-
sider that an Edifice is a kind of Body
consisting, like all other Bodies, of
Design and of Matter ; the first is
produced by the Thought, the other
by Nature ; so that the one is to be
provided by the Application and
Contrivance of the Mind, and the
other
