za; cominciammo per questo ad era-
minare che cosafusse bellezza, e che
bellezza si convenisse a ciaseuno edi-
ficio. E avvenga che in tutte queste
si trovassero alcuna volta difetti ; an-
dammo investigando in che modo si
potessino rimediare o restaurare.
Ciascun libro adunque è segnato
con il suo titolo, secondo la varietà
delle cose, perciocché il Primo Li-
bro tratta dei Disegni, il Secondo del-
la Materia, il Terzo dell' Opera, il
Quarto di tutte le opere in univer-
sale, il Quinto delle opere in parti-
colare, il Sesto degli ornamenti, il
Settimo dell' adornare gli edificj sieri,
F Ottavo dell' adornare gli edificj
public! e secolari, il Nono dell'ador-
nare gli edificj particolari e privati,
il Decimo della restaurazione degli
edificj, aggiuntaci una varia istoria
delle acque, e come si trovino,
e quello ache nelle ficcende giovi lo
Architetto. Oltre quattro altri libri,
trede'qualitrateranno dell'arte della
Pittura, ed il quarto della Scoltura.

And we further reflected, that nei-
ther the one nor the other of itself
was sufficient, without the hand of
an experienced Artificer, that knew
how to form his Materials after a
justDcsign. And the use of Edifices
being various, it was necessary to
enquire whether one and the same
kind of Designwas fit for all sorts of
Buildings; upon which account we
have distinguish'd theseveral kinds
of Buildings : wherein perceiving
that the main point wasthejustcom-
position and relation of the Lines
among themselves, from whence
arifes the heigth of Beauty, I there-
fore began to examine what Beauty
really was, and what sort of Beauty
was proper to each Edifice. And
as we often meet with Faults in all
these respefls, I considered how they
might be alter'd or amended. Every
Book therefore has its Title prefix'd
to it, according to the variety of the
Subject : the Fir st treats of Designs ;
the Second, of Materials; the Third,
of the Work ; the Fourth, of Works
in general ; the Fifth, of Works in
particular ; the Sixth, of Ornaments
in general ; the Seventh,of the Orna-
ments proper for Sacred Edifices}
the Eighth, of those for pub-lick and
profane ones; the Ninth, of those
for theHouses of privatePersons ; the
Tenth, of Amendments and Altera-
tions inBuildings: to which is added*
a variousHis tory of Waters,and how
they are found, and what use is to bei
made of the Architect in all these
Works : as also four other Books>
