Of the Region, of the Climate or
Air, os the Sun and Winds which
assect the Air.


LI Antichi usavano diligenza quanto
più potevano grandillima, nella scelta
d'una Regione in cui non fusse cosa al-
cuna nociva, e che filile ripiena di tutte
le commodità, e sopra tutto guardavano con ogni
diligenza di non avere l'Aria grave o moietta,
con savio invero e maturo consiglio : Acconsen-
tivano certo che sé la terra e l'acqua avellerò in
loro alcun difetto, si potevano con l'arte e con
lo ingegno correggere ; ma affermavano che l'Aria
non si poteva mai né con ajuto alcuno d'ingegno,
riè con moltitudine alcuna d'uomini corregere
e risanare tanto che battane. E certamente il
fiato dello alito co'l quale solo noi veramente co-
noseiamo mantenerli e nutrirli la Vita, sarà molto
giovevole allasalute, sé egli sarà lommamente pu-
ro. Quanta forza in oltre abbia l'Aria nel ge-
nerare, producere, nutrire e mantener le cole ;
nell'uno è che no'l sappia. Conciosiachè si
conosee che sono di maggiore ingegno coloro che
lì nutriseono di più pura aria, che quelli che si
nurriseono di più grossa et umida : La qual cesa
si penlìi, che lusse la cagione, che gli Atenitsi
fullmo di molto più acuto ingegno, che i l'ebani.
Noi conoseiamo che l'aria secondo il (Ito e positura
de' luoghi, ci pare ora d'una maniera, &: or
d'un' altra : Le cagioni delle quali varietà ci pare
in parte di conoseerc, & parte ci sono del tutto
nalcose ed incognite per la occulta natura loro.
Ma diremo prima delle cagioni manifeile, di poi di-
sputeremo delle più recondite, acciocché noi pollia-
mo eleggere Regioni commodilììme, ed in quelle
vivere ianillimamcme. Gli Antichi Teologi chia-
marono l'Aria Pallade : Quella dille Omero,
eh' era Dea, e si chiamava Glaucope, che lignifica
Aria pura che di sua natura iia lucidillima. E
certo li vede chiaro quell'aria essere sanissima, la-
quale e purgatillima & purillima, e che con la
villa li può facilmente penetrare, lucidissima, e
leggicrillimu, etutta semprea unmodo, enonvaria.

to fix upon a Region that had in it
nothing noxious, and was surnilh'd
with all Conveniences ; and cspecially
they took particular Care that the Air was not
unwholesome or intemperate ; in which they
shew'd a great deal of Prudence ; for they knew
that if the Earth or Water had any Defect in
them, Art and Indultry might corredi it ; but
they affirmed, that neither Contrivance nor Mul-
titude of Hands was able suflicicntly to correct,
and amend the Air. And it mull be allowed,
that, as what we breathe is so conducive to the
Nourilliment and Support of Lise, the purer it
if, the more it mull preserve and maintain our
Health. Belides, how great an Influence the
Air has in the Generation, Production, Aliment,
and Preservation of Things, is unknown to no-
body. It is even observed, that they who draw
a pure Air, have better Understandings than
those who breathe a heavy nioitl one : which is
supposed to be the Reason that the Athenians hud
much Iharper Wits than the TIicI/ms. We know
that the Air, according to the different Situation
and Position of Places, affefls us Sometimes in
one manner, and sometimes in another. Some
of the Calises of this Variety we imagine we
undersland ; others by the Obscurity of their
Natures are altogether hidden and unknown to
us. We sliall (irli speak of the manifetl Causes,
and consider afterwards of the more occult ; that
we may know how to chute a Region commo-
dious and healthful. The Ancient Theologilla
call'd the Air Pallas. Homer makes her a God-
deG, and names her Qkucopis, which signisies an
Air naturally clear and transparenr. And it is
certain, that Air is the moll healthy, which is
the moll purged and purified, and which may
mod ealily be pierced by the Sight, the cleareil
and lightett, and the leali Subjil to Variations.
