chiato punto di mucido, di vileolo, o di crudo,
onde gli abitatori sé ne ammalino. Lascio starc
quello che dalle acque Ipcllo procede, come diven-
tar gozzuti, ed avere la pietra; lascio tutte quelle
più rare maraviglie dell' acqua, che raccolte dotta-
niente ed elegantemente Virruvio Architettore.
Egli è sentenza d'Ippocrate lìtico, che coloro che
beranno acqua non purgata, ma grave e di cattivo
iapore, diventeranno con la pancia sfrannola ed
enfiata, e nelle altre membra del corpo, come
nelle gomita, nelle spalle ccnel viso, diventeranno,
dico, al tutto estenuati ed oltramodo lottili. Aggi-
ungivi che per difetto della milza, induritovi il
(àngue, calcheranno in varie spccie di malattie e
pelli, nella Hate per il ssussb del ventre, e per il
movimento della collora, e per il risolvere de gli
umori mancheranno, oltra che in tutto 1' anno
avran continue e gravi infcrmitati, come idropiCa,
asina, e dolori di fianchi. I giovani per li umori
melancolici impazzeranno. I vecchi per accen-
derli gli umori arderanno : le Donne difficilmente
ingrax ideranno, edifficilissimamente partoriranno:
ogni Sello ed ogni età finalmente cadrà innanzi al
tempo, di morte non ragionevole, tiratavi e con-
sumata dalle malattie : Nò avranno giorno alcuno,
nelquale non dentano melancolici, o dimoiati da
cattivi umori, e vedati da ogni sotta di perturba-
zione : Oltra che csagitati dell'animo, saranno
tempre in messizia e dolore. Potrebbonsi dire più
cote delle acque, notate dalli antichi irrorici va-
rie e maravigliose, ed ctfìcacillime allo star tino,
ed allo Ilare ammalato degli uomini : Ma elle son
rare certo, e servirebbono forsè più a motf rare di

lor luogo, più lungamente li parlerà. Quello certo
non è da (prezzare, il che è manifeitillimo: cioc-
che dell' acqua li nutriseono tutte le cote che cres-
cono, le piante, i temi, e tutte quelle coli che an
l'anima vegetativa, de' frutti e della abbondanza
delle quali cote gli uomini ti rinfreicano, e ti
nutriseono. Se quello è com, certo e' bi sogna.

Book I.
Partii, but lofty, and as it were a Hawk to look ,
clear round about, and constantly resreih'd on
every Side with delightful Breezes. Belides this
let there be Plenty of every tiling ncccdary, ci-
tlicr to the Convenience or Pleasurc of Life, as
Water, Fire and Provisions: Rut Care mull be
taken, that there is nothing in any of these things
prejudicial to the Health. The Springs mull be
open'd and tailed, and the Water tried by Fire,
that there be no Mixture in it of mucous, viscous
or crude Particles, that may alfcel the Conllitu-
tions of the Inhabitants. I omit the ill Efiefls
that often proceed from Water, as breeding Wens
in the Throat, and giving the Stone ; as likewise
thole. other more wonderful EtFefts of Water
which I'ltntvim the Architect has learnedly and
elegantly iumm'd up. It.ii the Opinion of the
Phylician Hipocrates, that they who drink Water
not well purged, but heavy and ill-tailed, grow
Cholicky, and to have large swell'd Bellies, while
the rest of their Members, their Arms, their
Shoulders and their Faces become thin and exte-
nuated. Add to this, that thro' the Fault of the
Spleen ill digesb'ng of the Blood, they fall into se-
ccia! kinds ofDissempers, sonie even peltilential.
In Summer, Fluxes of the Belly by the stirringof
the Choler, and the dilTblving of the Humours
walte all their Strength ; and all the Year round
they are continually liable to heavy and tedious
Infirmities, such as the Dropsy, Asthma and
rleurisy. The young lose their Scutes by melan-
choly Bile : the old are burnt up by the Inflam-
mation of the Humours: the Women with Disfi-
culty conceive, and with more Dissiculty bring
forth : In a Word, every Age and ever)- Sex will
fall by early and untimely Deaths, destroy'd and
worne away by Diseases ; nor will they enjoy a
tingle Day while they live, without being tor-
mented with Melancholy or black Humours, and
fretted with Spleen and Vapours ; to that their
Minds will never be free from Vexation and L'n-
ealiness. Many other Things might be Paid of
Water, which have been observed by the ancient
Hillorians, very curious and remarkable, and os
extream Efficacy to the Health of Mankind: but
the)' are uncommon, and might seem rather in-
tended to make a Shew of Know ledge than for
aclual L'se ; belides that we Inali speak more co»
pioully of Waters in their proper Place. Thus
much certainly is not to be neglected, and is moll
maniicil, namely, that Water gives Nourilsiment
to all Plants, Seeds, and every thing cite that
has the vegetative Lise, with the Plenty ut wh -le
