ad invesligare la Cominodità delia
Regione.
E quelle sole cose badano ad eleggere
la Regione, le quali per loro steise si
reggono, e sono manifede, ma bisogna
ancora coniìderare ogni cosa notando
con l'animo più secreri indizii. Perciocché laranno
buoni indizi! d'ottima aria, e d' acque perfette, sé
quella Regione farà in abbondanza frutti buoni,
sé ella nutrirà molti uomini, e vecchìlsimi, sé la
gioventù vi sarà gagliarda e bella, le continua-
mente vi si genererà, aggiuntovi sé i parti saran-
no naturali e senza Modri. Io certo ò veduto
alcune città, le quali non voglio nominare, ris-
petto a tempi, nelle quali non é donna alcunache
non si vegga in un medesimo idante edere diven-
tata madre di uomo e di Modro. Un' altra
città ò veduta in Italia, dove naseono tanti
Gobbi, Guerci, Zoppi, e Bidorti, che e' non
vi si moltiplica samiglia alcuna, che non abbia
alcuno manco o alcuno dorpiato. E certamente
il vedere si spelse, e grandi disagguaglianze da
corpo a corpo, e da membro a membro, ne aver-
tisee, che ciò intervenga da difetto di Cielo, e
dì aria, overo da alcuna altra cagione più secrcta
di corrotta natura. Né sia fuor di proposiro, quel
che e'dicono, cioè che nell' aria grolsa abbiamo più
fune, e nella sottile più sete; e manco si diseon-
venga che dalle forme ed esfigie de gli altri ani-
mali lì possa congetturare che corporature vi deb-
bano avere gli uomini : Perciocché sé vi lì ve-
dranno i bestiami e le pecore gagliarde, grandi,
grode, ed adai, si potrà non a caso sperare dì
dovervi avere figliuoli simili. Né sarà fuor di

will be a good Sign of an excellent Air and of good
Water, if the Country produces Plenty of good
Fruits, if it foders a good Number of Men of a
good old Age, if it abounds with ludy handsome
Youth, if the People are fruitful, and if the
Births are natural and never monstrous. I have
myself seen sonie Cities, which out of Respess: to
the Times I forbear to name, where there is scarce
a Woman, but what sees herself at the same In-
danr, the Mother both of a Man and of a Men-
der. Another City I know in Italy, where there
are so many People hump-back'd, squint-eycj,
crooked and lame, that there is scarce a Family,
but what has somebody in it defective or d.dortcd.
And certainly, where we see such frequent and
great Inequalities of Body to Body, and Member
to Member ; we may well conclude, that it pro-
ceeds from some Defefl in the Climate or Air, or
from some more hidden Catise of the Corruption
of Nature. Nor is it foreign to our purpose what
has been observed, that in a gross Air we are more
inclined to Hunger, and in a thin one to Third:
and wc may not improbably draw some Con jeflures
from the Shape and Looks of other Animals, what
Conslitutions the Men will have in the same Plate;
for if the Cattle look lively, fat and large, you may
not unreasonably hope to have Children that will
