nere, e di altezza, e di larghezza, e finalmente
d'ogni sorte di seompartimento e figura. Ell'en-
do adunque errore l'uno e l'altro, fare i! muro
più lottile o più groslo, e più alto o più basso,
che la proporzione e il modo non ricerca ; lo
nientedimeno vorrrei più prello peccare in
quella parte, che piuttosto sé ne potesse levare,
che avervi ad aggiugnere. In quello luogo
mi piace di non salciare in dietro gli errori de
gli Edificj, acciocché noi ne divenghiamo più ac-
corti. La principal lode, è che e' non vi sia
difetto nessuno. Ed io ò considerato nella
Chiesa di San Pietro in Roma, quel che il fatto
da per sé Hello dimostra essete (lata cosa mal
conlìgliara, che e' fusse tirato sopra i continu-
ati e spesli vani, o muro molto lungo o largo,
senza averlo fortisicato con alcune linee torte,
né con alcuno altro fortificamento. E quel che
meritava più considcrazione, è, che tutta quella
Alia di muro, la quale à lotto troppo spelìì e
continuati vani, ellendo tirata molto in alto,
fu cspolla per Berzaglio a gli impetuosì fiati di
Greco. Laonde di già è avvenuto, che per la
continua moleftia de' Venti, ella s'è già piegata
dalla su» dirittura più di tre braccia. Né du-
bito punto che in breve, o per poca spinta, o
poco movimento non rovini. Ma che più, sé
ella non fusse rattenuta dalle travate de' tetti,
sarebbe di già per il suo incominciato piegarfì,
certamente rovinata. Ma e' iì debbe alquanto
manco biasimare lo Architettore, che essendo
forsè ito drieto alla necessità del luogo e del
sito ; st penlo forsè per la vicinità del monte,
d'esser' assai sicuro da i Venti, il qual monte
sopravanza al Tempio. Io avrei voluto niente-
dimanco, che quelle Alie da tutte due le bande
sulsero più fortificate.

are Faults, cither to make the Wall too thin or
too thick, higher or lower than the Rule and
Proportion requited ; yet of the two I wou'd
chine to osfend on that side', where we shou'd
have occasion to take away rather than to add.
Ani here I think it will not be amil's to take
norjee of some Errors in Buildings, that we our
sines may be the more circumspect : in as
much as the chief Praisc is to be exempt from
Blame. I have observed theresore in St. Pita's
Church at Rome what indeed the thing itself de-
monllrates, that it was ill advised to draw a
very long and thick Wall over so many frequent
and continued Apertures, without llrcngth'ning
it with any curve Lines or any other Fortifi-
cation whatsoever. And what more deserves
our notice, all this Wing of Wall, under which
are too frequent and continued Apertures, and
which is raised to a great heighth, is exposed as
a Butt to the impetuous Blasls of the North-
East : by which means already thro' the conti-
nual violence of the Winds it is swerved from
its Direction above two Yards : and I doubt not
that ina short time, some little accidental (hock will
throw it down into Ruins ; and if it were not
kept in by the Timber Frame of the Roof, it
mull infallibly have fallen down before now.
But the Architect may not be so much in fault,
because consulting only the necessity of his Si-
tuation, he might perhaps imagine thac the
Neighbourhood of the Mountain, which over-
looks the Church, might be a sufficient sheltcr
against the Winds. Ncvcrtheless it is certain,
thole Wings ought to have been more slrength-
ned on both (ides.
