lezza. S' egli accaderà in alcuno lurgo porre più
copertine, giungansì talmente l'ima all'altra,
che coloro che una fiata sono in caia, pollano
andar per tutto al coperto.

Estad a dire de' Vani : i Vani sono di
due sorte, perciocché altri servono a
Lumi ed a Venti, ed altri allo entrare
ed useire degli abitatori e ili tutte le
cose necelTarie per tutto lo edificio. A lumi ser-
vono le finellre, alle cole le porte le scale e gli
spazj tra le colonne : e quelli ancora onde le
acque ed i sumi sé ne vanno, come pozzi, fogne,
o per dir così, gole di cammini, bocche di forni,
e truogoli, ed acqua], si chiamano ancora Vari
E debbe ogni Danza dello Edificio avere finellre
onde l'aria rinchiusa sé ne polsa useir via, e per
tempo rinovarli, perchè altrimenti si corrompe-
rebbe e iarebbe cattiva. Racconta Capitolino
illorico che in Babilonia nel Tempio di Apolline
su trovata una Casiettina d'oro antithiuima, nel
rompere della quale, ne uscì un vapore di aria
corrotta per la lunghezza del tempo, e talmente
velenosi ; che {pandendosi, non {blamente am-
mazzò quelli che erano quivi vicini, ma corruppe
ili cruileliìlìma pelle tutta l'Alia insino a' Parti.
In Ammiano Marcellino illorico abbiamo letto,
ne' tempi di Marco Antonio e Vero, in Se-
lciaia dopo che fu spogliato e rubato il Tempio
e tral'portata in Roma la Immagine del Conico
Appollinc, ell'ervi (tato ritrovato da' Soldati un
piccolo buco, slato prima riturato da Sacerdoti
Caldei, il quale poi aperto da' detti Soldati, come
avidi

Of the Apertures in the Building,
that is to fay os the Windoivs and
Doors, and os those which do not
take up the whole Thick,>/ess of the
Wall, and their numher andsizcs.
E are now come to treat of the Aper-
tures, which are of two sorts, the one
serving for the AdmilKon of Light and
Air, and the other for the Entrance
and Pasiage of the Inhabitants, and of all man-
ner of Conveniences all thro' the House. Those
for Light are the Windows; those sor Pastage,
the Doors, Stairs, and the Spaces between the
Columns: those too which are for the carrying
away of Water and Smoak, as Wells, Sinks, the
Gullets as we may call them of Chimneys, the
Mouths of Ovens and Furnaces are also called
Apertures. No Room ought to be without a
Window, by which the inclosed Air may be let
out and renew'd, becaule else it will corrupt
and grow tmwholesome. Capitolinus the Hillorian
relates, that in the Temple of Apollo at Bdyhi
there was found a little Gold Casket of very
great Antiquity, upon opening of which there
ill'ucd a Steam os Air, corrupted by length os
time, and so poysonous, that spreading itsell
abroad, it not only killed every body that was
near, but insected all Asta with a mofl dreadsul
Plague quite as far as Partbia. In the Hillory
of A mini.w u i M.iycdlhiiis we read, that in SdeucU
in the time of Mark Anthony and I'erus, after tljj
plunder and (polling of the Temple, and carry-
ing away the Image of the Conic Apollo to Romt,
