EL porre le Scale, è tanta la briga, che
tu non le potrai mai porre bene lenza
maturo ed clsaminato consiglio. Per-
ciocché in una Scala vengono tre Vani,
uno è la porta, per la quale tu vuoi entrare a salire
per le Scale, l'altro è la fineslra onde viene 11 lume,
perchè tu po(Ta vedere lo aggetto de Gradini : il
terzo Vano è quello che si fa nel palco, per il
quale noi andiamo l'opra il piano di sopra, e per
quello dicono che e' non è maraviglia che le Scale
impediseano 1 dilegui de gli edih'cj : Ma chi non
vuole edere impedito dalle Scale, non le impediica.
Stabiblcono quelli tali un determinato e proprio
spazio del sito, per 11 quale si possà andare in su
ed in giù liberamente, insino idle coperture che
sono allo seoperto. Né e' incresea che le Scale
occupino tanto del sito; perciocché elleno ci ar-
recheranno all'ai commodità, non arrecando in-
commodità alcuna all'altre parti dello Edificio.
Aggiugni che quelle volticciuole e vani che rimar-
ranno lotto dette Scale, serviranno a commodità
grandilbma. Le Scale apprclTo di noi sono di due
ione : Perciocché delle Scale che s'appartengono
alle eipcdizioni da guerra o a' munizioni non
parlerò in quello luogo. La prima sorte è
quella, che non a Gradini, ma si saglie per un
pendio a sdrucciolo, e l'altra è quella, la quale
li siglie per Gradini. I nollri Antichi tisarono
quelle eh' erano a sdrucciolo, e con manco pen-
dio che potevano, e lìccome i' ò considerato ne'
loro Edisici, penlarono che quella filile all'ai coni-
moda, la quale fulTe condotta talmente, che la
sua linea che cadelle a piombo, dalla sina maggi-

rent sorts, os the Steps of the
Stairs which ought to be in odd
numbers, and bow many. Os the
rssting Places, os the Tunnels sor
carrying away the Smoke. Os
Pipes and Conduits sor carrying
osf the Water, and os the proper
placing of Wells and Sinks.

ver plate them well : for in a Stair-case
there meet three Apertures : one, the Door by
which you enter upon the Stairs ; another, the
Window that ii.pplies you with Light to see the
Steps by, and the third, the Opening in the.
Ceiling which lets you into the Area above; and
therefore it is said to be no wonder, that the
Stairs Ihou'd perplex the Design of a Structure ;
but let him that is delimits to have the Stair not
hinder him, take care not to hinder the Stair,
but allow it a determinate and jull Portion of the
Platsorm, in order to give it its free course quite
up to the Covering at the top of all. And do
not let us repine that the Stair-case Ihou'd take
up so much of the Area, for it fumilhes us with
very many conveniences, snd is no inconvenience
to the other Parrs of the Building. Add to this,
that thole little Vaults and Spaces under the Stairs
are very serviceable sor a great many purposes.
Our Stair-cases therefore are of two sorts (sor as
to those Steps or Ladders which belong to military
Expeditions, I lhall not speak of them here.) The
firll is that which has no Steps, hut is mounted
by a Hoping Asccnt, and the other is that which
is mounted by Steps. The Ancients used to make
the Hoping one as easy and as little deep as pol-
siblc, and as I have obsened from their Works,
thought it a convenient Ascent when the bighe»
