ma essèrsi trovate ancora le colè che li tanno
lòtto il terreno, come sono i condotti ed i canali
ed i ricevimenti d'acque piovane, e le fogne e
limili. Io certo piò che esercitato dall'uso di colo
tali, lo quanto e'sia difficile condurre ima opera
ove lìeno le parti congiunte con dignità, commo-
dità e grazia ; ciò è che elleno abbiano si le altre
cole da clscrne lodate, sì ancora ima varietà di
ornare parti, qual li ricerca alla convenienza e
regione delle proporzioni. Il coprire poi tutte
quelle cole con coperture accomodate, chili-
nate, convenienti ed atte ; io giudico che non
sra opera sé non da lavio e saga.ee ingegno. Fi-
nalmente quando tutto il Modello e la invenzione
della opera piacerà grandemente a te, ed a gli
altri di ciò cscrcitatillimi, in modo che tu non
v'abbia dentro dubbio alcuno, o che tu deliberi

elaminare; Io ti avvertilo; che tu non corra a
suria, per desiderio di edificare, a cominciare hi
opera, rovinando muraglie antiche, o a gittare
i grandissìmi fondamenti di tutta la opera, ilehs
fanno gì' inconlìderati ed i furiosi. Ma sé tu
suni a mio modo, lòpralsedcrai per alcun tempo,
tanto clic quella approvata invenzione diventi
vecchia. Come quello che finalmente ti ravve-
drai di tutte le cole quando non tirato dallo
amore della tua invenzione, ma dalle ragioni del
diseorso, ne giudicherai più constderatamente.
Perciocché in tutte le cose che lì anno a fare,
il tempo ti mollrerà aliai cose, che tu contra-
pclcrni e conhdercrai ; le quali, sebben tu folli
accuratissimo, ti erano fuggite.

have had no small Experience in things of this
Natine, I indeed know the difficulty of persorm-
ing a Work, wherein the I'arts arc joyn'd with
Dignity, Convenience and Beauty, having not on-
ly other things praisc-worthy, but also a variety
of Ornaments, inch as Decency and Proportion
requires ; and this no qucllion is a very great
matter : but to cover all these with a proper,
convenient and apt Covering, is the Work ol none
but a very great Mailer. To conclude, when
the whole Model and the Contrivance of all the
I'arts greatly pleascs both yoursclf and others of
good Experience, so that you have not the leali
doubt remaining within yoursclf, and do not
know of any tiling that wants the leali Rc-exa-
mination: even then I wou'd advise you not to
run surioussy to the Execution out of a Palhon
for Building, demolilhing old Structures, or lay-
ing mighty Foundations of the whole Work,
which raih and inconiidcrate Men are apt to do;
but if you will hearken to me, lay the thoughts
of it aside for seme time, till this favourite In-
vention grows old. Then take a frclli Review
of every thing, when not being guided by a
fondness sor your Invention, but by the Truth
and Reason of things you will bfe capable of
judging more clearly. Because in many cases
lime will di (cover a great many things to you,
worth Conlideration and Rcsicclion, which, te
you ever so accurate, might besore escape you.
