Qiali cose si Mulino a provederc

tempo, fecondo ti parere degli An-
tichi si debbano tagliare i legnami.
E cose che si anno da apparecchiare son
quelle certamente : Calcine, Legnami,
Rene, Pietre,oltra quelle, Ferro, Bronzo,
Piombo, Vetro e limili. E (òpra rutto
giudico che e'sia da eleggere Maestri che sappiano,
che non lìano leggieri né incollanti ; a quali tu
abbia a dare in commilhone ed a raecommandare
che ti facciano subito il ben dilegnato edificio, e
che lo conducano dandoli pertezzione con pre-
ilezza. E nello approvare tutte queste cose,
ti gioverà argomentare, e congetturare dalle altre
opere più vicine che sono in edere ; mediante
le quali, avvertito, ti delibererai di ciò che tu
abbia a tare nel caso tuo. Perciocché notando
tu in quelli le iodi et i difetti, potrai pensare
che nell'opera tua polsano accadere cose Umili.
Nerone Imperatore avendo disegnato di dedicare
in Roma una statua grandiilima in onore del Sole
di lelìanta braccia, mediante la quale egli supc-
ratse la grandezza e la Magnificenza de'luoi pas-
satij secondo che scrive Plinio, volle prima che
egli allogane tal'opcre a Zcnodaro in quei tempi
celebrato ed eccellente Scultore, vedere quanto
ei valerti: e sapelTe in fare tali opere, il quale
in Overnia di Francia aveva fatto un Cololso
di peso maraviglilo. E cobi deliberate quefte cose
paniamo alle altre. Noi veramente nel trattare
quello che sia commodo alle opere degli edifici],
ridiremo quelle cose, che ci anno insegnate i
noftri più dotti antichi, e mallime Teófrasto,
Aristotile, Catone, Varrone, Plinio, e Virgilio, per-
ciocché per una lunga ollervazione, inclito più
che per alcune arti d'ingegno, li conoseono, ac-
ciocché elle li piglino da coloro che con somma
diligenza l'anno osseriate. Seguiteremo adunque

who will compleat it with all expedition. And
in fixing upon all these, it will'be of lise to you
to be somewhat guided by the coniidcrarion of
other Works already finilh'd in your Neighbour-
hood, and by the Information you receive troni
them to determine what to do in your own cale.
For byobicrving the Faults and Beauties in them,
you will conlider that the same may happen
in yours. Aero the Emperor having torni'd a
Delign of dedicating a huge Statue of an hundred
and twenty foot high in honour of the Sun a:

before in Greatness and Magnificence, as Pliuv

treating of the Materials nceelsary tor Building,
to repeat thole things which have been taught
us by the molt learned among the Ancients, and
particularly Tbcopbmjlus, Arijlotle, Cito, l'ano,
Pliny and '";>?//, because they are learn'd more
from long Observation than srom any quicknesi
of Genius; so that they are best gather'd from
thole who have observed them with the grcarctt
