thing to observe the Nature of this Element,
for if you take away the Fire, the Kiln
will grow cooler and cooler by Degrees at
the bottom, while it continues burning hot
at top. But as in building we have occa-
sion not only for Lime, but Sand, we will
now say ibmething about that.

diver si luoghi.

quella è di molte lorti : nera, bian-
ca, rolla, incarbonchiata, e ghiajosa: ma sé
alcuno mi dimanderà che cola ò Rena, Io for-
sè gli risponderò, che ella é fatta (rotte le
maggiori pietre) di minutissime pietruzze. An-
cora che a Vitruvio parelse che la Rena, e
mallmie quella, the in Toi'cana chiamali in-,
cacbonchiata, fusse una certa sorta di terra
abbruciata, e fatta divenire più soda che la
terra non cotta, e più tenera, che il Tufo,
da i fuochi rinchiusi sotto i Monti dalla na-
tura delle cose. Ma lodano l'opra tutte que-
lle Rene il carbonchio. I' ò cpnliderato, che
in Roma tisarono ne' public! ediliej non però
r.e1 minori la rolla. La più cattiva dì quelle
di Cava è la bianca. La ghiajosa nel n'em-
piei e i fondamenti è commoda, ma intra le
migliori; nel secondo luogho tengono la ghiaia
1 utile, e maliime 1' angolare e che non a in
le punto di terra, come è quella che lì tro-
va appretto i Vilumbri. Doppo quella loda-
no la Rena di fiumi, che it cava, levatane
dilopra la prima seorza, ed infra quelle de*
fiumi, quella de' Torrenti, ed infra quelle
i migliore quella che è infra monti, dove le
acque anno maggior pendio. Neil' ultimo
luogo vien la Rena che li cava di mare.
Ed infra quelle Rene minine, non biasimo al
tutto, la più nera ed invetriata. Nel Prin-
cipato presso a Salernitani, non pospongono la
Rena the e' cavano del mare, a quella delle
Cut,

HERE are three sorts of Sand, Fit-
land, River-sand, and Sea-sand ; the
belt of all these is the Pit-land, and this
is of leverai kinds ; black, white, red,
rhe carbuncly, and the gritty. But if any
mould ast what I take Sand to be, I might
perhaps answer, that it is nothing but a com-
polition of the smallell Stones, the large, ones
being all broken to pieces ; tho' it is i'itnt-
vim's opinion, that Sand, especially that which
in Tnjcmy they call the carbuncly sort, is a
kind of Earth burnt by the Fire inclosed by
Nature within the Hills, and made somewhat
harder than Faith unburnr, but softer than any
Stone. Of all these they moll commend the
carbuncly sort. I have observ'd, that in the
publick Buildings in Kane they used the red, as
none of the worll. Of all the Pir-sand the
white is the worll. The gritty is of lise in
lilling up of Foundations ; but among the bell
they give the second place to the finest of
the gritty, and elpecially to the (harp angular
sort, without the leali Mixture of Earth in it
as is that which they sind in the Territory of the
Vilumbrims. Next to this they etleem the River-
sind, which is dug after the uppermoll Layer is
taken ofs; and next to the River-sand, that of the
Torrent,especially of suchTorrents as run between
Hills, where the Water has the greater! Descent.
In the hill place comes the Sea-sand, and o( this
sort, the blacked and moll glazed is not wholly
to be deipiAl. In the Country near Salerno
they esteem their Sea-sand not interior to Pit-
sind, but they say it is not to be dug in all
