DclF Opra. In che consista la Ra-
gione del murare, quali sieno le
farti delle muraglie, e di quali
cofe abbiano di bisogno : Che il
sondamento non è parte della mu-
raglia : e quale sia il Terreno
buono per gli Edisicj.
7^£ UTTA la ni^ione dello edificare
lì volge intorno a quella cosa
sola, cioè che ammaliando con
ordine più cose iniieme, e con
arte congiugnendole ; o iìano
pietre quadrate, o pezzami, o
legnami, o qual' altra soda cosa tu voglia, e' si
faccia di esse quanto più si può, una salda, in-
tera, ed unita muraglia. Intere ed unite, si chia-
meranno quelle cose, le parti delle quali non sa-
ranno dalle altre parti uè spiccate nò disgiunte,
e che polle a* luoghi loro, si accolleranno ìnlìeme,
e seguiteranno tutto l'ordine delle lince. Bilogna
adunque conlìderarc nella muraglia, quali in ella
siano le parti principali, e quali le linee e gli or-
dini delle parti. Né lono naseoste le parti della
muraglia, che li à a fare ; Imperocché le parti da
alto, e quelle da basso, le da delira, e quelle da
sinillra, le vicine, e le lontane, e quelle che nel
mezzo di quelle ellremitati si ritrovano, sono
da per loro lUsse manifelle. Ma quel che liascuna
abbia in sé da natura, e perchè sieno infra loro
difserenti, non si cobi ogn' uomo: Imperocché il
condurle un' Edificio, non è cerne pensano gì'
ignoranti, porre l'uria pietra sopra l'altra, o il
murare l'un pezzame sopra l'altro, ma cstendo le
parti molto divelle, anno ancora bisogno di molto
diverte cole, e di diverta industria. Imperocché
altra cosa li aspetta a fare a' Fondamenti, altra al
ricimo,

Of the Work. Wherein lies the
Business os the Work ; the dif-
serent Parts os the Wall, and
what they require. That the
Foundation is no Part os the
Wall; what Soil makes the besi
Foundation.
|HE whole Business of the work-
ing Part of building is this; by
a regular and artful Conjunssion
of different things, whether
square Stone, or uneven Scant-
lings, or Timber, or any other
(bong Material, to form them as well as poilible
into a solid, regular, and consident Structure.
We call it regular and consident when the Parts
lire not incongruous and disjointed, but are dis-
posed in their proper Places, and are answerable
one to the other, and consormable to a right
Ordinance of Lines. We are therefore to con-
sidcr what are the principal essential Parts in the
Wall, and what are only the Lines and Dispoil-
tion of those Parts. Nor are the Parrs of the
Wall any thing difficult to sind out; for the top,
the bottom, the right lide, the left, the remote
Pans, the near, the middle are obvious of rhem-
sclves ; but the particular Nature of each of
these, and wherein they differ, is not so easily
known. For the railing a Building is not, as
the ignorant imagine, merely laying Stone upon
Stone, or Brick upon Brick ; but as there is a
meat Diversity of Parrs, lb there requires a
great Divcriity ot Materials and Contrivance.
For one thing is proper in the Foundation, ano-
ther in the naked Wall and in the Ooruilh,
