Cap. XIV.
Che lo. Volte sono di varie forti, e
in quel che le simo disserenti sra
loro, con che linee le si stalnli-
scano, e qmtl fid il modo dello
allentarle.
ARIJ sono i modi delle Volte, et è be-
ne andare invelligando in quel che le
sumo differenti, e di che lince le si fac-
ciano : e' ini bisognerà formare nuovi
nomi, acciocché io Ha in quelli mici libri, siccome
io deliberai, e facile et aperto. Ne mi è natolo
che Ennio Poeta chiamò il cerchio del Cielo, Vol-
ta grandilliina : e Seivio chiamò Caverne le Vol-
te fatte alla guisa di Carine. Ma io ihieggio que-
lla licenza, che si tengano in quelli miei libri
per ben dette, tutte quelle cose che attamente,
apertamente, e a proposito dette saranno. I mo-
di delle Volte sono quelli, A mezza botte, A spi-
^oli,e A cupola tonde, e sé alcune altre ve ne sono
che liano di alcuna determinata parte di quelle.
Quelle A cupola tonde, non li pongono per loro
natura mai, sé non sopra mura che si alzino Cor
pra della pianta loro in cerchio. Le A spigoli li
pongono sopra le piante quadrate : Le A mezza
botte li pongono sopra piante di quattro angoli,
sumo o lunghe o corte, -siccome noi leggiamo
ne' portici sotterra. Quella Volta ancora, che
sarà limile ad un monte traforato, li chiamerà
similmente A meza botte : Sarà adunque queslo,
come sé tu accortali! uno o più ardii l'uno accan-
to all'altro, o come sé tu diltendellì molto, o al-
largali! del tutto la larghezza d'una piegata tra-
ve. Per il che avverrà che sopra il capo ci starà
per coperta un muro piegato. Ala sé a quella tal
Volta Abotte, forsè tirata da Settentrione a mez-
zodì, sc ne attraverserà un' altra tirata da Le-
vante a Ponente, e la intersecherà con pari li-
nee, che a guisa di piegate corna concorreran-
no negli angoli ; quella chiameremo noi Crocie-
ra. Ma le più archi e uguali s' intersecheranno
scambievolniente nel punto del mezzo della som-
mità, saranno una Volta limile al Cielo, e per-
ciò n' è piacciuto chiamarla A cupola perfetta.
Quelle Volte che son fitte di parti di quelle,
sono di quella maniera:' le la Natura con diritta
divisione e a piombo dividerà il mezzo cerchio
del Cielo in due parti dall' Oriente all' Occi-
dente ; ella ti farà due Volte, le quali certo

and wherein they disfer ; of what
lines they are compofed, and
the method of letting them set-
tle.
HERE are several sorts of Vaults ; so
that it is our busmess here to enquire
wherein they differ, and of what Lines
they are composed; in doing of which,
I diali be obliged to invent new Names, to make
myself clear and perspicuous, which is what I have
principally studied in these Books. I know Emiiu
the Poet calls the Arch of the Heavens the migh-
ty Vault ; and Senilis calls all Vaults made like
the Keel of a Ship, Caverns : But I claim this li-
berty ; that whatever in this Work, is express'd
aptly, clearly, and properly, fliall be allow'd to
be express'd right. The different sorts of Vaults
are these, the plain Vault, the camerated, or
mix'd Vault, and the Hemispherical Vault, or
Cupola; belldes those others which partake of
the kind of lome of these. The Cupola in
its nature is never placed but upon Walls that
rile srom a Circular Platform : The Camerated
are proper for a square one ; the plain Vaults
are made over any quadrangular Platform, whe-
ther long or lliort, as we see in all lubterra-
neous Porticoes. Those Vaults too which are
like a Hill bored through, we alio call plain
Vaults; the plain Vault therefore, is like a num-
ber of Arches joyn'd together lideways; or like
a bent Beam extended out in breadth, so as to
make a kind of a Wall turn'd with a swecp
over our heads for a Covering. But if silch
a Vault as this, running from North to South,
happens to be cross'd by another, which runs
from East to West, and interseres it with equal
lines meeting at the Angles like crooked Horns,
this will make a Vault of the Camerated iort.
But if a greater number of equal Arches meet
at the top exailly in the Centre, they constitute
a Vault like the Sky, which therefore we call
the Henusphorical, or compleat Cupola. The
Vaults made of parts of these, are as follows:
if Nature with an even, and perpendicular
seition, were to divide the Hemisphere of the
Heavens in two parts, from Eall to Veil,
it wou'd nuke two Vaults, which wou'd be
proper
