un' opra, mediante la quale di-
fendetlino ie steill e le cose loro da tutte le
male qualità de' Tempi. Attesero di poi ancora,
che non solamente quelle cose che fussero neces-
sarie alla sallite loro, ma che tutte quelle anco-
ra, che giovalTero a quallìvogliano espcdite com-
modità,nonsilascia(Tero in maniera alcuna in die-
rro. Oltra quello, avvertiti e allettati in tal mo-
do dalla opportunità delle cose, vennero a quello
che eglino andarono esaminando, cioè a fare gli
edificj di manieratile con eili potessìno adempire i
loro diletti e i loro piaceri. E quelto colìuma-
rono 1' un Dì più che 1' altro: in modo che
sé alcuno dicelse che degli Edificj alcuni, fulie-
ro flati fatti per la uccellila della Vita, alcu-
ni per 1' opportunità de' bisogni, e alcuni per
i diletti degli uomini, secondo i tempi; sorsè
direbbe il vero, e bene. Ma quando noi andia-
mo guardando per tutto la grande abbondanza

That all Buildings, whether con*
trived sor ncccjjity, convcvicncy,
or plcasurc, were intended sor the
service os Mankind. Of the se-
veral divisions os humane Con-
ditions, whence arifes the diver-
sity os Buildings.

IT is plain that Building was in-
vented for the service of Man-
kind ; for if we consider the
matter ever so little, it is na-
tural to suppose that their first
design was only to raile a Stru-
cture that might defend them and theirs from
the ill qualities of the weather ; afterwards they
proceeded to make not only every thing that
was necelsary to their safety, but also every
thing that might be convenient, or useful to
them. At List, instrucled and allured by the
opportunities that naturally offer'd thcmselves,
they began to contrive how to make their
Buildings lubsen'ient to their Pleasures and
Recreations, and proceeded every day further
and further in so doing: ^o that if upon corl-
sldering the various sorts of Buildings, we shpu'd
say, that sonie were contrived by Neceility,
sonie by Convenience, and sonie by Pleasure,
it might, perhaps, be no ill definition of the
matter. Yet when we take a view of the great
plenty and variety of Buildings all about us,
