sé alcuni ve ne saranno cattivi ; o ella nel suo
arrivare, non gli accreseerà punto. Finalmente
io vorrei piuttuilo che i Fiumi, i Laghi, e limili^
si stendesimo vei lo Corea, clic verio Aullro, pur-
ché la 'l'erra non iia polla a Bacìo o sia a tramon-
tana l'otto un Monte, eh' è il peggio! lìto, eh'
esser polla. Lal'cio le altre cose che abbiamo di"
sputate di Copra : E' lì la che Aullro è molto grave,
e di natura tardo, talmente che piene le Vele de'
Navigli della (ila gravezza, quasi come opprelìì
da nò grandillimo peso, si affondano. Ma Borea
per il contrario, par che faccia il Mare e i Navi-
gli leggieri ; e pure qual s' è 1' uno di quelli, è be-
ne che ti stia lontano, piuttosto che riceverlo ta-
le, eh' ci batta, o si appicchi alle facciate delle
mura: e biasimano grandemente quelle Fiumare
che corrono infra ripe molto seosecse, con gran
Fondo lalloso e ombroso : perciocché le acque lue
sono nocive a bere, e 1' aria sopra vi è mal sana.
Oltre a quello il porli lontano da Stagni e Paludi
d' acque morte e fangosej è certo cosa da uomi-
ni savj, e considerati. Non replico le infermità
dell' Aria, che in quello luogo si raccozzano : sit
certo, per la natura di Umili luoghi, oltre a tutt' i
fallidj della State Fetori, pulci, ed altri schift
Animali ; che quando tu pensi che 1' aria vi sia
purgatissima ; e' non vi manca quel che abbia-
mo detto che interviene nelle pianure, cioè che
nell' Invernò vi sono eccellivi freddi, e nella
State ribollimenti llemperatillimi. Ultimamente
e' bisogna aver' una eilrema cura e diligenza,
che o monte, o ripa, o lago, o padule, o fiume,
o fonte, o qual' altra di quelle cose tu ti voglia,
non vi stia dì maniera, eh' ella polla render forte
il nemico, o difenderlo, e arrecare a suoi Cittadi-
ni da alcuna delle bande, incommodita veruna.
E quello balli della Regione e del Sito della
Citta.

bell polition for a City will be to have the River
come in from the Fall, and go out towards the
Well ; becausc then that breeze, or gcnile wind
«rhich rises with the Sun, will carry the vapours
out of the City, if any noxious ones should
arile, or at leali it will not encreale them itself;
However, I wou'd rather have a River, Lake
or any other Water extend to the North than
to the South, provided the Town do not Hand
under the lliadow of a mountain, which is the
Woril situation in the World. I will not repeat
what we have laid before, and we know that the
South wind is very heavy and slow in its nature,
insomuch that when the Sails of a Ship are fill'd
with it, the VclTel seems oppress'd with its weight
and draws more water; whereas, the North wind
on the contrary seems to lighten the Ship and
the Sea too : however, it is better to keep both
these at a dillance, than to have them continual-
ly beating againll the Wall. Nothing is more
condemn d than a River ssowing under high steep
banks, with a very deep stony channel, and al-
ways (haded ; because its water is unwholsom to
drink, and the Air upon it dangerous: And to
avoid settling near Bogs and Marihes, or Handing
muddy Waters is the part of every prudent con-
siderate builder. I need not mention here the
diseases occalion'd by setch neighbourhoods: we
need only observe of these places that belides the
common nuisances in Summer of ill smells, Fleas
and other nally Vermin, they are liable to one
great inconvenience besides, when you imagine
the Air to be wholsomell and clearell (which we
also took notice of in relation to all Plains) that
they are subjeii to exceshve colds in Winter, and
excessive heats in Summer. Laiily, \ve mull be
very sure that none of these, whether Hill, Rock,
Lake, Bog, River, or Well, or the like, may be
so disposed as to be likely to strengthen or tup-
port an Enemy, or to bring any manner of m-
conveniencies upon your own Citizens. And this
is as much as is necelTary with Regard to the
Region and Situation,
