ghe, e Campanelle di ferro, alle quali li pollano
legarci Navìgli. Faccinviss {pelle volticciole, sot-
to le quali lì mettano al coperto le cose portate.
Murinvili ancora in su le Bocche, Torri alte e
gagliarde ; acciocché dalla Lanterna di elle, lì veg-
gano venire le Vele, e quindi la notte con fuochi
inoltrino a' Naviganti il cammino lìcuro ; e con
le loro merlature disendano i Navigli degli Ami-
ci $ e mettinvilì a traverso catene che tengano fuo-
ra i nemici. E dal Porto al dritto mezzo della
Città, dirizzili una strada maestra, ove concorra-
no all'ai Borghi ; acciocché da ogni verso li polla
in un subito alTalire la insoiente armata de' nemi-
ci ; et abbia più a dentro alcuni Seni minori, do-
ve i Navigli indeboliti li pollano ralTettare. Ma
non li lasci di dire, appartenendoli egli madame
al Porto, che vi furono e sono Città celebrate, si-
curc più per ciò, che per altro, cioè per aver le
bocche, e in luogo delle bocche, l'Entrata incer-
ta, e le divertita de' Canali conolciute appena da
chi vi nuota, movendovi!! il fondo d'ora in ora.
Quelle son quelle cose che ci è parso di dire, de-
gli Edifkj publici in generale : le già non ci li ag-
giugnesTe, che dicono che li {comparti scano le Piaz-
ze : che alcune servano a potervi vender le cose
che nella pace vi saranno portate ; alcune lcrvano
perchè la gioventù vi si clerciti; e alcune che nel-
la guerra lervanoa riporvi Icgnami,(ìrami, ed altre
cosi fatte cole che t'abbiano a sèrvire a lopportare
l'asfedio. Ma il Tempio, i Luoghi l'acri, il Luogo
da rendere ragione, e il Luogo da Spettacoli e li-
mili, sono piuttolto luoghi communi; che proprj
o di non molti : e lpettano a Sacerdoti,o Magillra-
ti, e però tratteremo di elsi a luogo loro.

a Haven and running up a Peer. Besìdes all this,
a good Haven lhou'd have places to walk in, and
a Portico and Temple, for the reception of per-
sora that are jull landed ; nor ITiou'd it want Pil-
lars, Bars and Kings to fallen Ships to ; and there
lhou'd alio be a good number of Warc-houses or
Vaults for the laying up of Goods. We shou'd
alio at the mouth eress high and ltrong Towers,
from the Lanterns of which we may spy what
Sails approach, and by sires give directions to the
Mariners', and which by their fortisications may-
desend the Vcll'els os our Friends, and lay chains
across the Port to keep out an Enemy. And from
the Port sttait thro' the heart of the City ought
to run a large Street, in which leverai other quar-
ters of the Town lhou'd center, that the inhabi-
tants may presently run thither from all parts to
repulse any insult from an Enemy. Within the
bosbme of the Haven Iikewil'c, lhou'd be leverai
{mailer Docks, where battered Veil'els-may resit.
But there is one thing which we ought not to
omit, lince it relates entirely to the Haven ; which
is, that there have been, and now. are, many fa-
mous Cities, whose greateit security has lain in
the unsife and uncertain entrance of their Har-
bours, and from the variety of its Channels made
alinoli hourly by the continual alteration of the
bottom. Thus much we thought proper to lay
of Publick Works in the universal acceptation; and
I cannot tell whether there is any occalion to add
what some insill upon, that there ought to be le-
verai Squares laid out in disferent parts of the Ci-
ty, some for the expoiing of merchandizes to sale
in time of Peace; others fortheExercises proper for
Vouth ; and others for laying up Stores in time
of War, of Timber, Forage, and the like Provisi-
ons neceslary for the sullaining of a Siege. As for
Temples, Chapels, Halls for the adniiniltration
of Jullice, and places for Shows, they are Buildings
that, tho' for publick use, are yet the property
of only a few persora ; which are the Priells and
Magistrates : and therefore we silali treat of then!
in their proper places.
