£1 SPUTAMMO nel pattato lì-
bro eh' egli è di necellìta acco-
modare variamente gli Edificj e
nella Città, e nelle Ville, secon-
do i bisogni de' Cittadini, è degli
Abitanti : e dimostrammo che al-
tri Ecsific] ipettano alla Università de' cittadini, al-
tri a' cittadini più degni, ed altri a' più ignobili: E
finimmo il ragionamento di quelli che alla Uni-
versità spettavano. Ordinerai!! ora il quinto Li-
bro alla necellìta e alla commodità de' Particolari.
Nella qual cosa certo e varia e grande e difficile,
ci sforzeremo per quanto sarà in noi d' ingegno e
industria ; che e' si abbia a conoseere, che non ab-
biamo voluto lasciare in dietro cosa alcuna che ih
qualunque luogo si voglia potesse fare a proposito,
o che potesse avere ad essere desiderata da alcuno ;
riè aggiugnercene ancora alcuna che giovi più ad
abbellire il parlar noltro, che a mettere ad effetto
la nostra Intenzione. Coitiincieremo adunque
dalle cose più degne. Degnillimi sopra tutti gli al-
tri sono coloro, a cui è data 1' Autorità e il fre-
no in mano del moderare le cose ; I quali o sono
parecchj, o pure un solo. E' bisogna che coltili,
sé sarà solo lopra tutti, sia pur'anche sopra tutti
gli altri il più degno. Andremo adunque conside-
rando quelle cose che per rispetto di coltili, che
iarà solo, sieno da sarli. Prima però noi deli-
bereremo, il che molto importa, quale abbia da es-
sere colini, o simile ad uno che con Integrità e
giuitizia comandi a coloro che da lui vogliono cs-
tere comandati, e non si mova, tanto per 1' inte-
rclse

Buildings ought to be varioussy
accommodated, both in City and
Country, according to the ne-
cessities of the Citizens and Inha-
bitants ; and that some belong'd
to the Citizens in common, others to those of grea-
ter quality, and others to the meaner sort; and
finish'd our account of those of the firlt kind. The
design of this fifth Book is to consider of the sup-
plying the necessaries and conveniences for parti-
cular persons. And in this copious and difficult
subjecl we (hall make it our ssudy, to the utmoit
of our ability and indusiry, to omit nothing real-
ly material or inltruftive, and not to lay any
thing more for the cmbclhlhment of our dilcourse
than for the necessary explanation of our silMecL
Let us begin therefore with the noblelt. The no-
blelt are certainly those who are cntrulted with
the supream authority and moderation in pub-
lick Affairs. This is sometimes a single Person,
and sometimes Many. If it is a single Person,
that Person ought certainly to be him that has
the greatelt merit. We lhall therefore firlt con-
sider what is necessary to be done for one that
has the sòle power in liimself. But wè mult pre-
vioussy enquire into one very material difference j
what kind of a Govcmour this is ; whether ona
that with jultice and integrity rules over willing
Subjects ; one not guided so much by his own in-
terclt, as the good and welfare of his People: or
such a one as would have things so contrived
