Che gli Alloggiamenti de Pontisici
soìio i Chiostri. ^i al si a Tofficìà
del Pontesice. %tante sieno le for*
ti de Cbìostri, e dove salliano a
collocare.
Li Alloggiamenti de' Ponrefici sono i
Chiostri, ne' quali, e per eslere Religio-
ii, a per attendere alle virtù (i regimano
molti : come son quelli che ii sono
dati alle cose l'acre, e quelli che an fatto voto di
Castità. Sono i Chiostri de' Ponrefici ancora quel-
li, ne' quali si esercitano gì' ingegni de gli studiosi
circa la agnizione delle cole umane e divine. Per-
chè sé 1' osficio del Pontefice è di condurre la mol-
titudine degli uomin per quanto e' può, ad una
vita quanto pili si puote perfètta; quello non farà
egli mai per migliore, che per quella della Filoso*
sia: Conciona che esfondo nella natura degli uomini
due cose,che ci pollano far perfetti, cioè la Virtù e
la Verità ; quando avverrà che quella ne inlegni a
quietare e levar via le perturbazioni dell'animo ;
e questa ci dimostri e communichi le ragioni e
i fccreti della Natura ; l'ingegno si purgherà dall'
ignoranza, e la mente dalla contagione del corpo :
per lo che diventando la nostra una Vita beatil-
iirna ; diventaremo sinali a gli Dei. Aggiugni quel
che appartiene a gli uomini buoni, siccome debbo-
no esiere, e voglion' clsor tenuti i Pontefici : cioè,
che debbono pensare a quelle cose, studiarle, e an-
dar loro dietro, che e' conoseono elsor bene che
gli uomini facciano verso gli altri uomini; cioè
di giovare e porger' ajuto a gì' infermi,a gì' impo-
tenti e abbandonati, con far buoni officj verso
di loro, beneficarli, e usar loro misericordia. Que-1
ile sono quelle cose nelle quali il Pontesice debbe
esercitare sé ed i suoi. Di quelli si fatti edisici
appartenenti a' maggiori o a minori Pontefici do-
viamo noi trattare, e però comincicrcmoci da Mol
nallerj. I Mónallerj son di più Sorti : o sono
riserrati di modo ; che non sé n' esea mai in publi-
co, sé non nill'andar sorsè nel Tempio e alle pro-
cessioni : overo non cosi riserrati, . che e'
non vi si posfa mai entrare. Di quelli ancora, al-
tri servono per le Donne, e altri per gli Uomini.
I Mónallerj delle Donne, non biasmio che sieno
dentro la Città, conciosia che suori, la solitudinc
sarà che e' non saranno molto srequentati ; e chi

HE Prietl's Camp is the Cloyfter in
which a certain number os persons shut
themselves up together in order to de-
vote themselves either to Religion ot
Virtue ; such are those who have dedicated them-
selves to the sacred Functions, or who hav« ta-
ken upon themselves a vow os chastity. Bei
sides this, the Cloyster is a place where persons
of lludious dispositions employ themselves about
the knowledge of things as well divine as hu-
man : for as the Priest's duty is as sar as in hini
lies to lead Mankind into a course os life as near
to perfection as possible, this can never be done
more esfectually than by Philosophy. For as
there are two things in the nature os Man to
which this must be owing, Virtue and Truth J
when the former has taught Us to calm and go-
vern our Pallions, and the latter to know the
principles and secrets of Nature, which will
purge the mind from ignorance and the con-
ragion ot the Body : we may then be quali-
fied to enter into a happy course of lise, and to
have some rescmblànce with the divine Nature
itseis. Add to this that it is the duty of all good
men, as the Pricsts ought and wou'd be thought
to be, to exercise themselves in all those offices
Of humanity which are due srom every Man tei
his neighbour, namely, to assili and relieve the
Poor, the Distrelsod and the Infirm, tó the ut*
moll of their power. Thele are the things in
which the Priell is to employ himsels and all
those under his direction. Of the Structures pro-
per for these purposes, whether belonging to the
superior or inserior rank of Priests, we are now
to treat : and first we lhall begin with the Cloy-
ster. Cloyllers are os sevcral sorts, either sor
such persons as are to be so striclly consined
that they must never appear in publick at all,
unlets at Church or in Procelhons : or sor those
who are to be allowed a little more liberty. Os
these again sonie are sor Men, others sor \Vomeiu
