ihose which were in it before, not differing the
Water ever to Magnate, and that the ssower the
Water is in renewing, the less wholcsomc it is.
And thus much may suftice as to the care and
mdustry of the farmer or overscer, in the affairs
abovemenrioned. But we mull not here omit
the chief thing needful with relation to the ga-
thering together and storine up the fruits of the
harvest, and that is the Threshing-ssoor which
ought to lye open to rife Sun and Air, and not
far from the Shed mentioned before, that Upon
any sudden rain you may immediately remove
both your Grain and Workmen into Ihelter. Iri
order to make your sloor, you need not give
yourself the trouble to lay the ground exactly
level ; but only plane it pretty even, and then
dig it up and throw a good quantity of lees ofoyl
upon it, and let it soak in thoroughly ; thert
break the clods very small and lay them down
even, either with a roller or a harrow, and beat
it down close with a rammer ; then pour some
more lees ofoyl upon it, and when this is dried
into ir, neither mice, nor ants will come a-near it,
heither will it ever grow poachy or produce grass
or weeds. Chalk likewise adds a good deal of
firmnefe to a work of this nature. And thus
much for the habitation of the Labourers.

Cap. XVII

Sale volte all' occidente equinozziale, e le Camere
iidimamente

Chap. XVII.
Of the Country houfe [or a Gen-
tleman ; its various parts, and
the proper dispo/ition os each of
thofe parts.
O M E are of opinion that a Gen-
tleman's Country-house Ihou'd have
quite different conveniences for Sum-
mer and for Winter ; and the rules
they give for this purpose are these : the Bed-
chambers for the Winter Ihou'd Icok towards
the point at which the Sun riles in Winter, and
the Parlour, towards the Equinoctial Sun-setting :
whereas the Bed-chambers for summer Ihou'd
look ro the South, the Parlours, to the Winter
Sun-rising, and the Portico or place for walking
in, to the South. But, in my opinion, all thest
Conveniences ought to be varied according to the
difference of the Country and Climate, so as •
to temper heat by cold and dry by moil!. I do
not think it is necessary sor the Gentleman's
honse to stand in the molt fruitful part of his
whole
