amended the text, and, by drawings and other il-
lustrations, facilitated the study os his author. In
1513 when mod of the quarter os Rialto, in that
city, was destroyed by fire, he furnished a magnifi-
cent design for rebuilding it. It consisted os a forum
surrounded by porticos, with houses and warehouses
for the merchants, church, exchange, an ornamen-
tal bridge, &c. To his infinite discontent this great
plan was laid aside, and a wretched one, of Zam-
fragnino a very inferior architect:, carried into exe-

piers and arches turned upon them, so well applied as
to insure the seupendous masses they help to support.
He reslated, in 1521, the Ponte della Pietra, at
Verona, and, by a very simple process of planking,
sortified the middle pier, several times destroyed by
ssoods. After which repair it continued immoveable
till 1757, when the v/hole was borne down by a most
sormidable swell os the Adige.
Jocundus was critically paiTesied os the Greek and
Latin languages. To him are owing the first useful
edition of Vitruvius —Illustrations of Csesar’s Com-
