INTRODUCTION,

Marcello Cervini, afterwards Pope Marcello II, M,
(afterwards Cardinal) Maffei, Alexander Manzuoli
and. other persons of distindtion attended 3 who em-
ployed Vignola in designs and works that contri-
buted to his support, and extended his reputation.
Francesco Primaticcio, a Bolognele and excellent
painter, coming to Rome about this time srom
France to colled! pidtures, and procure copies os the
n oil celebrated statues and reliefs, in order to their
being call: in bronze, as ornaments for the royal pa-
laces, singled out Vignola for his assistant there 3 and
at his return carried him into France, where he
palTed two years in planning many works which
failed of execution, through the distress of the times,
by the foreign wars and civil disturbances, with which
Francis I was continually harrassed.
Returned to Bologna, he gave a design sor the
front os St. Petronio, much approved by Giulio Ro-
mano and Christoforo Lombardi.* In the Facciata
de’ Banchi, that makes a sort of wing to that Ca-
thedral, his dextrous management os the site, and
some old buildings that could not be removed, ex-
bited a surther molt advantageous display os his abi-
lity 3 though his design was dropped sliort by the
omission os two turrets, that would have added
greatly to its essect. At Minerbio, near Bologna,
he built a palace sor Count Isolani. But the mo Pc
important service, that neighbourhood owed to Vig-
nola, was his conducting the Canale del Naviglio,
which ran three miles wide os it, into Bologna 3 an
