Victims of circumstances we of Heidelberg College,
eight masters, about fifty boys and a microbe, found
ourselves on 13 th March journeying to Auerbach —
a village of about a thousand souls — situated in the
Bergstrasse.

Perhaps "victims" scarcely conveys the true idea
of what we really were, for instead of languishing in
tedious exile in an out-of-the-way village in an out-of-
the-way corner of the world, we had a rollicking time
of sport, mirth and gaiety in spite of the mornings'
session devoted to serious studies. The Krone Hotel,
our temporar}' headquarters, made an excellent substitute
for a school, whilst the proprietor proved himself quite
