of seating between three and four hundred thousand people. In the centre of
this vast open space, athletes of all descriptions may compete with one ano-
ther, display to the full the excellences of their national characteristics, intro-
duce their national games and, in competition, show to the world the height
of physical achievement, thus enabling them to compare their strength and
