JEgina opened to us a new page in the history of sculpture, and
afforded a remarkable instance of the spirit and skill which pre-
ceded the perfection to which the art attained in the time of
Pericles. The discoveries at Selinus, it is presumed, afford an-
other striking example of the early progress of art; and while
the metopes of the temple on the eastern hill are supposed to
approach the style of the JEgina marbles, the metopes of the
temple on the western hill may be considered as still earlier spe-
cimens, retaining some of the style and character of Egyptian
sculpture.
