tops of scarp and counterscarp, is only 3 feet. A large
roundish stone, 5 feet by 4, lies on the scarp with two others
near it to the west, and two still larger form part of the top
of the counterscarp. The width of the ditch cannot be
certainly given, as it is difficult to say at what point the actual
edges begin, but it appears to be about 40 feet. The outer mound
here answers closely to the description given in the next section.
Croy.—Section No. 2.
[ Vallum almost obliterated and fosse nearly filled up. Section
limited to vallum.]
This cutting, 84 feet further west than the last, differs in
several respects from any of the others on Croy and- Barr Hill.
Its affinities are rather with the sections on Bonnyside, to be
described hereafter. The natural slope of the ground here
appears to have been a decided fall to the north, forward from
the vallum. The vallum, as in Croy No. 1, is very much worn
down, and the section is only 18 inches deep from the present
surface of the ground to the top of the stone base. The kerbs
are of squared freestone, 14 feet across, from the outer face
of the one to the outer face of the other, that on the south being
13 inches higher in level than the north one, a fact accounted
for by the pronounced downward slope of the ground to the
north. The bottoming is of rough stones, angular and rounded,
one of which, larger than the others, rises somewhat above
the general line of the base. Underneath the soil is a reddish
stony clay. Above the base, the soil is of a whitish sandy
character, with faint traces of the marly substance. The
layering is here very marked in the broad black streaks
across the section from side to side of the vallum. Of
these, five thin and thick lines are continuous across. They
are usually about 3 inches apart, and their general appear-
ance is well brought out in the scale drawing. They have
a tendency to converge towards the centre, and curve up-
wards from the centre to the outside of the vallum. In the
centre, they unite in a dense mass. With the lighter soil
intermixed, they make a dark band in the middle, measuring
