Across the fosse, the top of the counterscarp is fully 2|- feet
higher than the top of the scarp, and is on the same level as the
present crown of the vallum. The summit of the outer mound
is about 3 feet higher than the present crown of the vallum.
The outer mound attains very prominent proportions. Starting
from the top of the counterscarp, it rises slightly for 31 feet, and
then makes a rapid descent, falling 14 feet in about 38. At that
point, about 69 feet from the edge of the ditch, the natural level
is reached. This part of the mound is of abnormal height and
prominence for about 20 yards from east to west, measuring
along the crown. This exceptional part rises rapidly at each end
clear above the ordinary level of the mound. Even on the
surface, the large quantity of stones in it can be seen. They are
doleritic: those on the surface being from a foot to a foot and
a half long. It is not thought that there, has been any stone
building on this expansion of the mound, but it merits further
examination. It is somewhat segmental in shape, its chord
being the mound at its normal line. At one part it has a
rounded peak which is higher than the rest.
Some 12 yards beyond the large stone where the last measure-
ment of the ditch was taken, another block, 7 feet long by
5 deep, forms part of the face of the scarp. Opposite it there is
another, 5 feet by 3£. It is on the top of the counterscarp,
of which it probably formed the cap or crown. The fosse here
is 38 feet wide, and 8 feet 9 inches deep. The outer mound is
steep and prominent, and has very large stones in it and on it,
some of which are 6 feet long by 5 broad.
Croy.—Section No. 4.
[Cutting through vallum only. Vallum quite worn down.]
This shallow cutting, 212 feet west of section 3 (and about
30 feet higher in level than section 2), sits like Croy No. 3 on a
slope rapidly rising towards the west, and a cross slope still more
rapidly descending northward. The crown of the vallum is
26 yards north of the centre line of the military way running to
the south of it, and is over 4 feet lower in level than the military
