Croy.—Section No. 5.
[Section ihrougli. vallum only. Vallum quite worn down.]
This cutting, 193 feet west of Croy No. 4, is on the ascent of
the hill westward, a few yards from the 300 feet contour line
of the ordnance survey, and is on a slope descen(hng sharply
northward.1 The crown of the vallum, 18 inches above the stone
base, is 87 feet north of (and nearly 5 feet lower in level than)
the crown of the military way at this part, where the latter stands
very prominently nearly 2 feet above the normal level of the moor-
land, with large whinstone kerbs exposed, and with its crown or
middle distinctly elevated above the sides. The south kerb of
the vallum is of whinstone and the north is of freestone. The
base breadth from face to face of the kerbs is 14 feet. The
bottoming is normal—of rough stone. The soil is red earth, with
some whitish, sandy, grey matter. The presence of layers is
plain though the details are vague. There are, however, clearly
enough three black lines occupying 5 inches vertical as measured
near the north kerb. These are not protracted beyond the kerbs.
The berm, 33 feet wide, is, at its angle with the scarp, feet
below the highest part of the vallum, and nearly 2 feet higher
than the top of the counterscarp. The sides of the fosse have
somewhat fallen in, so that its present width is 45 feet. The
outer mound is here very narrow on the top : rising about 1 foot
from the edge of the counterscarp, it is 5 feet wide, and then falls
very quickly 11 feet in 30, reaching the natural level of the
ground about 35 feet north of the counterscarp.
Measured at a point 30 feet east of this section and 43 feet
west of a small thorn tree growing on the scarp side of the fosse,
the ditch is 40 feet wide and 7 feet deep. Here a large flattish
stone, 7 feet by 4, forms the top of the counterscarp. The outer
mound is horizontal for 14 feet, then falling 13 feet in 30, reaches
at about 44 feet from the counterscarp the apparent natural
level on ground still falling northward.
Some 24 feet west of this section (Croy No. 5), a large dolerite
