does not run all the way through both vallum and expansion.
It stopped midway through the expansion.1 The kerbs are of
whinstone, and the base breadth of the vallum measuring from
the outer face of one kerb to the outer face of the other is
14 feet. The bottoming is irregular and scarcely so close as usual >
but exceptionally level. The soil is the usual red earth, with
patches of grey, sandy and ochreish earth and streaks of the
whitish clayey substance. A large portion of the vallum in
this cutting is seen clearly in situ on the south face; it stands
about 5 feet high, the upper part of it being a dense and
compact mass of the whitish clayey substance about a foot
thick. The layering is vivid throughout this section. Black
lines, all thin except the lowermost one, make a delicate tracery
over the whole face of the cutting. Their general character and
parallelism, with forkings and angles and bends, will be made
more intelligible by the scale drawing (opposite) than by any
description. The following measurements were made some
weeks previous to the sketch for that plate, so that the reader
need not wonder if he finds it impossible to identify line for
line. In sections of an earthen structure like this, of course,
each week's exposure alters the face of the cutting. The first
line rested on the stone bottoming.
1st dark line, on bottoming;
2nd, at 1\ inches above the bottoming;
3rd, at 6 inches ;
4th, at 7 inches;
5 th, at 11 inches ;
6th, at 1 foot 2 inches;
7th, at 1 foot 7 inches;
8th, at 2 feet;
9th, at 2 feet 5 inches.
Two shades of black are discernible. The darker one is patchy
