Above the south kerb, inclining inward, a whitish line of
material rises from the kerb to within a foot and a half of the
top of the vallum. It is composed of a white clayey substance,
which makes a very notable contrast with the soil of the vallum
proper on the north side of it, and with the soils on the other or
southern side of it. The dark lines running through the vallum
are continued through the whitish clay, and then stop. The
whitish substance is in breadth, all the way up, about 13
inches, except at the top, where it is a little broader. It is to be
observed (1) that this whitish clayey strip of -13 inches broad
starts from the southern kerb, and slopes inward as it goes
upward, so that at a height of 5 feet from the stone base the
southmost portion of the strip is feet north of the perpen-
dicular of the south kerb; in other words, that the line is a
slope of Jr viz., 5 feet vertical upon 2| feet horizontal at base;
or as others term it, a slope of 2£ in 5, there being in the 5 feet
of rise a " batter " or intake of 2§ feet; (2) that the dark lines
in the vallum passing through the whitish strip are not pro-
