between their outer faces being 14 feet. The level of the ground
sufficiently explains why the north kerb is 7 inches higher than
that on the south; showing that, as in section Barr Hill No. 1,
the base line has followed the natural level of the ground. The
bottoming is of the normal type, mainly of broken freestone
forming an exceptionally regular floor. But a new feature is
here present—a culvert running across the base from north to

little westward so as to take advantage of both the slopes of the
hill, which are, as before noted, both north to south and east to
