standing, the surface of the vallum is still over 2 feet higher
than the herbs. These are of squared freestone, the distance
between their outer faces being 14 feet. The level of the ground
sufficiently explains why the north kerb is 7 inches higher than
that on the south; showing that, as in section Barr Hill No. 1,
the base line has followed the natural level of the ground. The
bottoming is of the normal type, mainly of broken freestone
forming an exceptionally regular floor. But a new feature is

south. It does not run transverse at right angles, but deflects a
little westward so as to take advantage of both the slopes of the
hill, which are, as before noted, both north to south and east to
west. The culvert is 15 feet 2 inches in length, with a water
aperture 7 inches wide, and from 5 to 6 inches deep. The
appearance of this interesting structure will be best understood
by referring to the photographic block. It has no laid
stone bottom except at the mouths, where flat stones serve
