The soil of the mound contrasts greatly with the alternate black
and white of the vallum. Here the soil is rough sandy clay,
with large stones (of freestone, some of them 1 foot square)
here and there, and full through and through of small stones.
In the whole section of the mound there is not a trace of any
layer except the dark line above described. The cutting at
the surface showed between the sandy earth and the heathy
vegetation growing above it a distinct mossy mould, some
inches thick, so that the soil had a thick strip of black just
under the heath.
About 150 yards east of Bonnymuir section No. 1, the outer
mound has upon it a rectangular heap or structure about
82 feet in length from east to west, and 42 feet broad from
south to north. Its highest point is on the north face. It stands
clear above the adjacent level of the outer mound, and there are
indications of stone work; but, meantime, it would be unsafe
to indicate any opinion, whether or not the shape of this
heap is due to direct structural purpose, or whether it is
accidental merely, and the result of natural characteristics of the
ground at that point.
Quite close to this section (Bonnyside No. 1), a few yards
eastward/there occurs another of the semi-circular expansions
on the south face of the vallum. About 140 yards further east,
there is what possibly may have been another expansion. The
ground, however, has here been somewhat disturbed. On the
whole, it is scarcely thought that this can be regarded as one of
the expansions.

No. 2 Bonnyside is 326 yards east of No. 1. Here the vallum
stands on a very slightly descending slope from south to
north. The vallum rises 2 feet 9 inches above the base, the
kerbs of which are of very roughly squared freestone exactly
laid. The width over the kerbs is 14 feet 10 inches, and
the bottoming is normal. Two pointed bits of freestone project
