Bonnyside.—Section No. 3. PLATE IV.

[Section of vallum, fosse, and outer mound.]

This very line section is 439 yards east of Bonnyside No. 2,
and 112 yards east of Mr. Russell's experiment. The rampart
has here been excellently preserved, and the section has proved,
perhaps, the most instructive of any yet made. The vallum
stands about 3 feet 6 inches in height above the base, which
is 14 feet 9 inches broad. The kerbs and bottoming of the base
are normal, being composed of what is locally known as the
" moorland rock " of the district. The kerbs are squared; the
other stones are of the usual rough character, some of them
being sharply angular and projecting above the ordinary floor
level. The soil is the same as in the last two sections. A few
small stones—the largest about 3 inches by 2 inches—are found.
The layering presents the normal features of the Bonnyside
type. There are ten black lines:—

Detached fragments of lines are found a little higher, but they
are not trustworthy enough to be counted. A sample of the
third line gave 35'2 per cent, of vegetable matter; one from the
sixth line gave 5-5; one from the tenth line gave 17"70; a
sample taken from the heart of the vallum (from which line not
noted) gave no less than 75-03; whilst another sample from
an unrecorded part of the section gave 23"5.

The eighth and ninth lines are reddish black, and are red at
some points.

A very noticeable feature here is the depression of the layers
