THE ANTONINE WALL REPORT.

outside the north-west angle of the camp, where vallum and
fosse climb a particularly steep part of the slope. The second
is through the vallum on the plateau at the north-western angle
of the camp, where the vallum proper forms also the north wall
of the camp. The third section is through the western wall of
the camp, a few yards south of the western gateway.

ROTTGHCASTLE.—SECTION No. 1. PLATE V.

[Section of vallum only.]

The slope falling westward is here very sharp, as will be seen
from a reference to the cross section showing it on Plate V.
The vallum is 4 feet 7 inches in height above the base. The
base is of the normal character, the kerbs being of squared free-
stone and the bottoming of rough moorland rock—a hard siliceous
sandstone as heretofore. The soil is whitish and brownish sand,
with patches of the familiar ochreish red sand intermixed. The
layering is very plain. There are fourteen well-defined black
lines as undernoted :—

The tints of white, brown, black, yellow and red in the various
soils of the vallum in this section give it a singularly rich general
effect. The layers show faint signs of protraction on both sides.
