In the soil, patches of fire-clay are found. These appear in
short layers, similar to .the whitish clay or marl-like substance
seen in the Croy sections. Clay of the same character as that
found in this Roughcastle cutting abounds in the vicinity, where,
indeed, several fh-e-clay furnaces are at work.

The dark lines extend to within a few inches of the present
western face of the rampart, forming also the eastern side of the
ditch. There is here no externally visible berm. The section
has not been carried through the ditch. It was only open for a
short time, as interference by indiscreet visitors, combined with
other circumstances, made it necessary to close it soon after it
was cut.
