by this time : but on the north, fallen blocks were to be seen lying on
the pavement, evidently the remains of the wall which had bounded

below the level of the concrete, but neither below nor above were
any antiquities of interest or value, nor remains of any structure in good
masonry. Here again the general ruin and spoliation of the ancient
buildings were established.

This conclusion was confirmed still farther by yet another pit, which
I sunk about 100 yards to the west-south-west, in the north-east
