centuries ago for tombs, and it does not seem likely to repay modern
explorers. We scoured it over an area of many miles, finding graves of
various ages, but all rifled. The newest were probably the brick beehive
erections near Mm Ushim; the earliest were certain poor sepulchres
north of a small isolated mound, so covered with worked flints as to
suggest that it was the seat of a factory of knives and implements.
These lie from two to three miles east of Bacchias, and must be of
Pharaonic times.
Towards the close of February both our sites and our funds were
becoming exhausted. For the final week we went back to Kum Ushim
in order to determine certain questions there by the experience
gained during the past two months at Kum el Katl. The answers so
obtained were negative, but by the way we reaped a small additional
harvest of papyri, terra-cottas, Roman glass and ostraka. It was
March 2nd when we finally shook the desert dust off our feet and con-
veyed camp and antiquities to Sennures; whence, having despatched
heavy goods to Cairo, we went for a short tour in other parts of the
oasis, the outcome of which, we trust, will be the devotion by the Fund of
a sum to a second enterprise in the Faiyum during the winter of 1896-7.
