is addressed to a aTpar/apxo'; ©>j/3??ç named John, whorn M. Maspero
identifies with the dux Thcbaidos of that name abont the years 548-553.
Mr. H. I. Bell bas communicated to the Classical Beview1" a fresh
reading in Brit. Mus. Pap. 273 (fragments of an epic on the Indian
adventures of Dionysus), which seems to establish an additional link
between that poem and Noimus, and thereby to strengthen the probability
of its being the ' Bassarica ' of Dionysius, which was one of the sources of
Nonnus' ' Dionysiaca.'
The non-literary documents in Oxyrhynchus vii are miscellaneous in
date and character, ranging from b.c. 22 to ad. 578, and including officiai
rescripts, documents connected with taxation, leases, loans, accounts,
orders for payment of bills, private letters, and so on. The principle
adopted in the earlier Oxyrhynchus volumes, of devoting each volume to
the documents of a single century (or approximately so) lias been
abandoned ; and we still bave to wait for those papyri of the fifth century,
which should do so nmch to fill up gaps in our knowledge, both of palaeo-
graphy and of administrative history. The présent volume contains six
plates, representing seven MSS., ail but one being literary. The
exception is a Latin document of a.d. 103, relating to the enrolment of
recruits.
The volume of Mélanges Châtelain, mentioned above, contains also two
non-literary texts from papyri, publislied respectively by Prof. Vitelli and
M. Haussoullier. The former,11 a document of the year 65, now at
Alexandria, is a sub-lease of a sanctuary of Isis at Nilopolis in the Fayum.
The latter12 (of which a facsimile is given) is a letter of the third century,
now in a private collection in Paris, addressed by one Ptolemy to bis
" sister " {i.c. wife), against whose complaints of his conduct he pro-
tests with mucli vigour and little grammar. Prom the same private
collection M. Haussoullier also publishes (with facsimile) a second
document,13 a pétition addressed by a vétéran named A^alerius to the
Prefect Q. Maecius Laetus, about the year 202, with référence to damage
done to his allotment of land at Cercesucha in the Fayum. The text
contains an interesting référence to grants of land made by "the
emperors" to "ail soldiers." A third article by M. Haussoullier14
contains a fresh text and commentary of the fragment of a code of laws
preserved in Lille Pap. 29.
Next to the Oxyrhynchus volume, the two largest publications of the
year are the tenth part of "Wessely's Studicn,1'- and the second fasciculus of
vol. II of the Florence papyri. Dr. Wessely's new publication consists
