Bissing, in Neue Jahrbucher fur das Klassische Alterthum, xxix. 81,
prints a lecture on the wisdom of the Egyptians and the science of the
Greeks. After reviewing the departments of Egyptian literature which
are concerned—mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, medicine—he con-
cludes that the most important if not the only notable scientific result
reached in Egypt was the compromise between the lunar month, and the
solar year in the amended calendar, which must have been the result of
long-continued observation.
Archaeology.
Sir G. Maspero has written a second French edition of his Guide du
Visitcur au Music du Caire. The first was issued in 1903, but no less
than five English editions have appeared in the interval. To the present
issue the author has prefixed an interesting sketch of the early attempts
to establish a museum in Egypt, and of the origin and growth of
Mariette's creation.
The Egyptian section of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Fine
Art having been put in order, an illustrated Handbook of the Egyptian
Booms has been prepared by the curators, Messrs. Lythgoe, Mace and
Winlock and Miss Eansom. A new wing will soon be completed and
handed over to the department, and then some rearrangement of this fine
collection will be needed.
Borchardt has written an illustrated pamphlet, die Pyramiden, giving
a clear account of the origin and development of the pyramid, and its
construction, intended to be explanatory of a very instructive model of
the entire funerary monument of King Sahure, exhibited at Berlin. This
model and another of themastaba of Userkafankh can be obtained through
the secretary of the Deutsche Orient Gesellschaft.
Macrizi's account of the pyramids, chiefly compiled from earlier writers,
is carefully edited from a collection of MSS. and translated by Graefe,
in a special work, Das Pyramiden-Kapitel in Al-Makrlzi's " Hitat"
reviewed by Sobernhelm, Z.D.M.G. lxvi. 321.
Capart has published a brief description of the temple of Seti I. at
Abydos, with fifty large photographic plates. He points out how few and
incomplete are the studies that have been made of this great and beautiful
temple, easily accessible for a few hours' visit but very inaccessible for

Jequier has completed his interesting collection of ceiling designs and
