C—CHRISTIAN EGYPT*

The acquisition by Mr. J. Pierpont Morgan of a large collection of com-
plete Coptic MSS. of the ninth and tenth centuries was the " sensation " 1 of
the year. It is said to have been discovered all together, though some doubt
has been cast upon this story, in the ruins of the monastery of St. Michael
(of which it perhaps formed the whole library), in the S.W. of the Fayum ;
two whole MSS. and all (?) the colophons are said to be in the Fayumic
dialect. Besides these, there is an early copy of the Gospels (probably
the earliest) in Bohairic [is it older than the Vatican Pentateuch ?], but
all the rest are in Sa'idic. In the Bible the acquisitions will be of
enormous value: there are Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Samuel I, II,
Isaiah, St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Jolm, all St. Paul's Epistles, and
those of St. Peter and St. John; all these are complete, and there is a
good deal of St. Luke. Outside the Bible there are a good many homilies
and numerous biographies, e.g., of St. Anthony and St. Pachoinius, and

* I owe some references to the kindness of Mr. Crum and Marcus Simaika Bey.
