Mutule, an ornament in the Doric cor-
nice, answering to a modillion in the
Naumachia, the representation of a sea
fight, which was at first made in the
circus maximus, but afterwards elsewhere.
Augustus dug a lake for this purpose
near the Tiber ; and Domitian built
a Naval Theatre.
Niche a cavity or hollow in a wall for
Nymph^eum, grottos, or buildings orna-
mented with statues, fountains, &c. and
dedicated to the nymphs. These were
perhaps occasionally the entrance to
private or retired baths.
