Scotia, a hollow moulding used in bases

cut perpendicularly from the roof down-
wards, and serves to shew the internal
decorations and distribution.

Shaft, the trunk or body of a column be-

Soffit; the word is also applied to the
ceiling of an arch, the under side of an
architrave, &c.

Steps for ascent. Vitruvius regulates their
height to about ten inches ; but to the
ancient temples they are generally
higher ; to the Doric temples at Poes-
tum they are sixteen, and to one
twenty inches high.
