Pendant la seconde moitié du xvm" siècle, la récente décou-
verte des villes antiques d'Herculanum et de Pompéi, jointe aux
VoJ'ages archéologiques entrepris à cette époque sur le sol inex-
ploré de la Grèce antique, firent éclore en France des ouvrages
'uxueux dont les Illustrations furent confiées à d'habiles artistes.
Nous empruntons à l'un de ces ouvrages le Cul-de-lampe ci-
Jessus, dû à la pointe gracieuse et habile de P. P. Choffard,

During the latter part of the xvmlh century, the récent dis-
covery of the antique cities of Herculanum and Pompeia added
to several archéologie travels undertaken at that period on the
unexplored soil of antique Greece, soon produced in France rich
Works the Illustrations of which were executed by talented
artists. We borrow from one of thèse works the above Bracket,
composed by the talented P. P. Choffard, 1778. (Fac-similé.
