Une des statues du porche nord de la cathédrale de Chartres
tient en mains cet encensoir de pierre, objet aussi délicat, aussi
riche, que s'il était en métal et sorti des mains d'un orfèvre. Il

pourquoi nous le présentons à la fois comme un modèle de
sculpture et un modèle d'orfèvrerie.

One of the statues of the northern portai of the Chartres
cathedral, is holding in its hands this censer in stone, but as
délicate and precious as if it were in métal and came out of a
goldsmith's hand. It is well known to the artists who have visited
the architectural marvel of Beauce. It has even been moulded
in plaster and it is from the stamp that we had it drawn and
engraved. Beyond a doubt it was first copied from a censer of
the time, and for that very reason do we offer it as a model at
once of sculpture and of the silversmith's art.
