Par elle-même, cette statuette représentée ici de la grandeur
mémo de l'exécution est déjà remarquable; mais elle prend en-
core de la valeur par la richesse et le bon goût de la plaque
émaillée qui lui sert de fond. Cette statuette de saint Paul faisait
sans doute partie d'une châsse dont elle ornait une des travées.
On peut alors se faire une idée par ce fragment de la richesse
et de l'importance du monument entier. L'apôtre assis tient en
main l'épée qui est son attribut. Il porte de la main gauche ut,
philactère sur lequel on lit cette inscription : s. secundum
carnem — vixemtis moriemim, c'est-à-dire si vous vivez selon la
chair, votis mourrez. Il est nimbé, et le nimbe est orné de
rayons. La tôte est d'un beau caractère avec barbe descendant
jusque sur la poitrine. Les yeux sont en émail et la bordure
du vêtement ornée de pierres précieuses. Quant au siège, il n'est
pas en relief; il est dessiné en émail et so mêle aux ornements
champlevés d'un si beau caractère, dont le fond est bleu.
Ce fragment est sans contredit une des belles choses pro-
duites par les émailleurs si féconds de Limoges pendant le
xme siècle. M. Germeau possédait également la statuette de saint
Thomas, d'un travail identique, et ayant eu sans doute la même
destination primitive.
