Gattamclata est un condottière fameux qui commanda les
armées de la république de Venise et vainquit Sforza on 1438.
C'est d'après l'esquisse en bronze de la statue originale que nous
avons fait exécuter notre gravure, et cette esquisse, un véritable
chef-doeuvre, appartient à M. le comte de Nieuwerkerke, surin-
tendant des Beaux-Arts. L'original est encore debout sur son
piédestal devant l'église de Saint-Antoine à Padoue.
Donatello était fort âgé lorsqu'il fut appelé de Florence à Padoue
pour l'exécuter; mais encore plein de vigueur, il mit dans cet
ouvrage ce qui lui restait d'énergie et ce qu'il avait acquis d'ex-
périence. On est frappé, en effet, de son grand style imité de l'an-
tique, joint à une vérité fine,pénétrante, a la sincérité d'expres-
sion qui sont les caractères principaux de toutes les sculptures
de Donatello. La statuette que nous montrons aujourd'hui parait
être le premier jet de la pensée du grand sculpteur florentin.

Gattamclata, a eclebrated condottiere, was commander of the
armies of the Venetian republic and conqueror of Sforza in 1438.
It is from the bronze sketch of the original statue that we have
had our engraving executed, and this sketch, a masterly pièce,
belongs to count de Nieuwerkerke, superintendent of the Fine-
Arts. The original itself is still standing on its pedestal before
Santo-Antonio church, in Padua.
Donatello was very old wben called from Florence .to Padua
to exécute that work; but still vigorous lie put into it ail bis
remaining strength and ail his acquired expérience. Indeed, one
is struck with his grand style, borrowed from the Antique, and
added to a sharp and great power of reality and of expressive-
ness : those being the principal characters of ail the sculptures
by Donatello. The statuette which wo show to-day, scems tobe
the first realization of the idea of the great Florentine sculpter.
