XVIIe SIÈCLE.— école alsacienne. BOUCLIER DE PARADE, EN BOIS PEINT,
des comtes de rjbeaupierre.
(AU MUSÉE DU COLMAR.)
Le parti pris décoratif de ce bouclier de parade nous a paru
d'une véritable originalité. Quatre arbres au feuillage grêle, ser-
vant à séparer des sujets de chasse, représentant en même temps
les saisons de l'année. Ces sujets sont peints à l'huile, mais le
nom de l'artiste et la date précise de l'exécution nous siht in-
connus. Le bouclier est en bois légèrement bombé et mesure
72 centimètres do diamètre; notre dessin est donc présenté au
tiers de l'exécution. L'original a été déposé, en 1794, dans les
collections publiques de la ville de Colniar, parles commissaires
chargés de rechercher et de sauver de la destruction les objets
d'art et de curiosité ayant, appartenu aux anciennes familles sei-
gneuriales et aux établissements religieux. La ville de lliheau-
ville, aux flancs des Vosges, où l'on voit encore les ruines pitto-
resques du château des comtes de Ribeaupierre, conserve une
précieuse collection de coupes en vermeil, véritables œuvres
d'art, remarquables à tous les points de vue.

There appearsto us sometliingtruly original in the conception of the décoration of this shield.
Four trees with few branches and scanty foliage serve to separate hunting scènes representing
the Four Seasons of the year. The subjects are painted in oil, but the name of the artist and
the précise date of exécution are unknown. The shield is of wood slightly convex and measures
72 centimètres (about 25 inch. engl.) in diameter : our design is therefore about one third
of the real size. The original was deposited in 1794 in the public collections of Colmar by
the Commissioner charged by the Government to seek ont and préserve from destruction the
objocts of Art and Curiosity that formerly belonged to noble families and conventual esta-
blishments. The town of Ribeauvillé, on the slope of the Vosges mountains, where the pictu-
resque ruins of the castle of he Counts of Ribeaupierre may still be seen, possesses a precious
collection of silver gilt cups, real works of Art, in every way remarkable.
